I live in Montgomery County in Alabama. I received a call from this number (which, at first glance, appears to be a legitimate call from the Montgomery area). The man on the line said he was Deputy Long calling on behalf of the Alabama Sheriff's Association and the call was to collect donations for the Association in the wake of calls to defund police across the nation. The Association is based out of Montgomery, Alabama. The man said any amount of money could be donated and anything donated was greatly appreciated. The pitch sounded legitimate so I told him I would donate $25.00. He asked me to hold so I could speak with someone who would get my address to send a pamphlet about the donation. When I was transferred to Angela in Processing, she thanked me for my commitment and asked how I planned to donate, by credit, debit, or automatic account withdrawal. I asked her to send the pamphlet to my office and that I would donate by check. Angela said the Association is trying to collect funds to be used immediately in the community for policing. She said "Don't you want this donation to go back to the community immediately?" She asked me to spell my last name and I asked if she intended to send the pamphlet or not and she again said something about "immediate action" so I hung up. The actual Alabama Sheriff's Association confirmed that this call was not from them and that, while the Association does in fact solicit money, its geared more towards businesses and most of the solicitation is in person or via mail. Thanks for keeping me on my toes telephone scammers, this one was more believable than others.
